At the early design phase of Kozloduy NPP, probable emergency scenarios were analyzed and every possible measure to prevent them has been implemented. WWER reactor types have proven reliability in all operating modes.

In spite of the low probability of occurrence, the required technical means for coping with such situations have been identified and organizational measures have been planned to ensure protection of staff and population and for preventing environment pollution. The organization and technical measures are regulated in the Emergency Plan, elaborated in compliance with the national legislation and the International Atomic Energy Agency requirements. In order to maintain the staff preparedness to respond in possible emergency situations, emergency exercises are conducted on yearly basis which verify the coordination of the joint activities with the regional and national structures of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, Directorate General Fire Safety and Civil Protection (FSCP) at the Ministry of Interior and the Regional Directorates of FSCP in Vratsa and Montana, Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism, etc.
