The safety of Kozloduy NPP is a main priority and a subject to independent state supervision exercised by the Nuclear Regulatory Agency of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria, the Ministry of Environment and Water and the Ministry of Health.

The activities related to the population protection and environment preservation are of primary significance for the plant personnel.

The radiation indicators of the environment components are within the normal limits of the values characteristic of the region. Conformity is established of the radio-ecological status of the environment around the NPP with the requirements of the existing radiation protection legislation.

In 2002 Bulgaria ratified the Kyoto Protocol. This is a serious step towards reducing the emissions of six greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O, HFCs, PFCs and SF6). The NPP electricity production does not generate greenhouse gases and has a substantial ecological contribution to the environment protection. With the amount of the electricity generated, in 2019 Kozloduy NPP saved the harmful impact on the public and environment of more than 19.5 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent, 64 thousand tons of sulphur dioxide (SO2), 14 thousand tons of nitrogen oxides (NOX) and 1.7 thousand tons of dust, containing natural radioactivity. This effect complies with the world trends to limit the ozone layer destroying emissions in the atmosphere.

In 1999 Kozloduy NPP was awarded the Bulgarian Green Party prize for its significant contribution to the environment protection, in acknowledgement of the safety enhancement implemented at the plant, and for its positive role on a national scale in achieving reduced emissions of carbon dioxide.

In June 2002, Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant was nominated by the Ministry of Environment and Water of the Republic of Bulgaria for its significant contribution to the protection and regeneration of the environment and natural resources.
