The high safety level of the Bulgarian nuclear power plant is maintained through application of the best world practice in accordance with current international standards and criteria. Kozloduy NPP maintains a continuous process of information and operational experience exchange working together with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) and other international organizations and leading companies in the filed of nuclear energy.

World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO)
WANO is the world association of nuclear operators, which was established on May 15, 1989. WANO was formed following the Chernobyl accidents by nuclear operators worldwide, who were determined to ensure that such an accident should never occur again. WANO unites all nuclear power operators in the world. It facilitates the exchange of operational experience, so that its members can work together to achieve the highest possible standards of safety and reliability in operating their nuclear power plants.
Kozloduy NPP plc is a member of WANO-Moscow Centre since its foundation. The contact person for WANO is Mr. Veselin Nikolov, Head of Section, Operating Experience and Self-assessment Indicators in Operations Division, e-mail: vnikolov@npp.bg

Within the relations with WANO, Kozloduy NPP is able to:

  • exchange information about events in plants around the world;
  • participate in workshops, working meetings and councils;
  • participate in the peer reviews of the WANO member plants;
  • be a host of peer reviews in different areas.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
The International Atomic Energy Agency is the world's center of cooperation in the nuclear field. It was set up as the world's "Atoms for Peace" organization in 1957 within the United Nations member states. The Agency works with its Member States and numerous partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies. The three pillars of the Agency's work are nuclear verification and security, safety and technology exchange.
Kozloduy NPP plc is under the control of IAEA. The contacts with IAEA are through Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA). The contact person for KNPP is Mr. Emilian Edrev, Director of Safety and Quality Directorate, e-mail: egedrev@npp.bg. The plant participates in a number of IAEA regional projects and technical cooperation projects.

Non-governmental Organizations
FORATOM
FORATOM is the European nuclear forum. It fosters and coordinates the activities of the member organisations; encourages the exchange of engineering experience between different countries; spreads information within the nuclear community; and strives to enhancement of power plants good practices. Kozloduy NPP plc participates in FORATOM activities through BULATOM.

BULATOM
Bulgarian Nuclear Forum Association (BULATOM) was established in June 2001. It is a non-governmental organization in which engineering and construction companies, companies supplying equipment, Kozloduy NPP plc, Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgarian Nuclear Association and physical persons, experts in the nuclear energy participate. In December 2001 BULATOM became a member of FORATOM – the association of European nuclear industry. Kozloduy NPP specialists take part in a number of seminars and forums, organized by BULATOM.

World Nuclear Association (WNA)
The World Nuclear Association (established in 1975 as an Uranium Institute) with head office in London, is a global nuclear organization which represents the world nuclear industry and seeks for ways to promote peaceful use of nuclear energy around the world. WNA deals with problems of nuclear energy generation and with all aspects of nuclear fuel cycle. WNA supports its members through assistance of their cooperation on technical, commercial and political issues and through increasing the public understanding on nuclear technology.
On the recommendation of the permanent representative of Bulgaria in IAEA and UN in Vienna Kozloduy NPP had undertaken steps for becoming a member of the World Nuclear Association. Kozloduy NPP became a WNA member in September 2001.

INTERATOMENERGO
Kozloduy NPP maintains a long cooperation with the Russian Company Interatomenergo. Through their participation in the events organized by “Interatomenergo” Kozloduy NPP specialists have an opportunity to discuss the innovations in the nuclear field and contribute to the establishment and development of mutual cooperation between operating organizations and generating companies.
